All in the name of a good cause, fourteen intrepid members of the Peddlers Cycling Club are embarking on a 300km bicycle ride to raise money for charity Heart to Heart Shanghai. I caught up with Jenni Reah, one of the cyclists riding for charity, to learn more about the ride and how the team is training.
“We found out about the charity event in August and have been training ever since. Short fast rides in the week with longer slower rides up to 200kms at the weekend. With wake up calls at 4am, we have all been known to mutter, ‘Who’s great idea was this?’
This will be by far the longest any of us have ridden in a 24 hour period. One member joked, ‘I thought it said 30km when I signed up!’
The training has been fun but challenging at times with bike issues, aches & pains and mental blocks (on the longer rides), but the teamwork during training rides has been amazing. We will definitely get each other across the line on the day.
The Charity Bike Ride will take place on Saturday, 23rd October, setting off from Jinqiao and hugging the coast of Pudong, Fengxian and Jinshan districts before returning along the route of the Huangpu River. It just goes to show how big Shanghai is!”
If you’ve ever travelled by metro or car down to Dishui Lake or over to Jinshan Beach then you’ll understand what a mammoth task the cycling team are undertaking. Please join us in wishing them well and show your support in the way of a donation to Heart to Heart.
Heart to Heart is a Shanghai based charity providing corrective surgery for Chinese children from all over China with congenital heart disease (CHD) whose parents are unable to afford the surgery. To date H2H has sponsored over 2,074 children for heart surgery. The surgeries not only saved their lives, but transformed the lives of their families. Entirely volunteer run, Heart to Heart Shanghai has $0 operating budget which means 100% of donations are spent on life changing surgeries.
