On Saturday, June 13, over 150 Shanghai Mamas members and friends came together at Colca North Bund to raise a glass (or several) and funds for Shanghai Baby’s Home. The “Bring It: Nonkids Going Out (BINGO) Party!” was promoted as a kick-off to a summer like no other where adults could come together and have fun for a good cause. Forty-three businesses donated prizes and funds to show their support.
The purpose of the event was to raise funds and awareness for Shanghai Baby’s Home. Providing up to 300 surgeries per year for children from orphanages around China who are sent to their facility, donations have been particularly hard to come by during the coronavirus crisis as many supporters are overseas and household and company budgets are shrinking.
The event was held in the new Colca North Bund’s vast indoor event space. Comedian Jorge Castellanos volunteered to emcee the event. Five rounds of bingo were called, each with a different sponsor and volunteer host:
- Round 1 was sponsored by Shanghai United Family Healthcare and hosted by comedian Maple Zuo
- Round 2 was sponsored by YCIS and hosted by teacher Cathal Grimes
- Round 3 was sponsored by PureSmile and hosted by comedian Jadey Baby
- Round 4 was sponsored by Jiahui and hosted by bearded drag queen Cocosanti
- Round 5 was sponsored by Swiss Butchery and hosted by popular trivia host and That’s Shanghai editor Ned Kelly
A silent auction was led through WeChat where participants could join from anywhere in the world. Prizes included hotel stays, restaurant and entertainment vouchers, and art. Shanghai Mamas co-founder Melanie Ham ran the auctions from the US.
The event was lively, fun, and raised 50,000 RMB from ticket sales, bingo ticket sales, and the silent auction. Funds were transferred to Shanghai Baby’s Home to provide care for children from orphanages across China who need medical treatment.
Director Zhang from Shanghai Baby’s Home expressed her gratitude: “Thank you very much for the help and support you and your friends provide us. Your good will is very appreciated in such a difficult time, we are very touched, thank you.” (“非常非常感谢你和朋友们对宝贝之家的帮助、支持在目前这个特殊时期，你们的这份善意尤其珍贵，让我们很感动”)
