Broommates

A ‘companion piece’ to the previous mops picture, ha ha. I took this last week as I was walking down Pu Ming Lu, across the road from the bus station. I remembered that in one of the free expat mags, maybe that’s Shanghai but I’m not sure, at some point before Expo opened they were talking about Haibao and asked readers to suggest what should be the real mascot of Shanghai, and there was near unanimous agreement: a random semi-abandoned handmade broom. I like they way these two were paired off and leaning casually up against the wall, like they were just waiting for a bus or something.

Welcome to the new photoblog project, Shanghai My Eye. Each entry will feature one photo taken somewhere around town that speaks in some way to the experience of living in this mad and marvelous metropolis. The goal is to build up a collection of images of Shanghai as seen through the eye of the shanghaimamas community – beautiful, strange, surprising, alarming, amazing. So please, send me your photos, along with a short paragraph about what the image means to you.

Email contributions to: kelliehenry@shanghaimamas.org You are welcome to submit as many photos as you like, but separately please – only one photo and description per email.

  1. All our visitors always comment on the brooms – I’m not sure if this is something common in Chinese cities, or just Shanghai?

  2. great photo! I think that laundry hanging from electrical wires would have been a good expo logo- perhaps with the flags of the world on the on various laundry items.

  3. Hey Kel, love your work, great to see there’s always new postings in Shanghai My Eye everytime I come by here :-)))))

Agree, the brooms are quite an attraction. The ones sold in Inner Mongolia are slightly larger. One day I ended up buying two of them for God knows why. Finally used them for Halloween decoration
