My name is Rhian and I’ve been living in Shanghai for nearly 2 years and in Hangzhou for a year before that. I have one son who was born in Shanghai in July 2009. I joined ShanghaiMamas when I was pregnant with my son and am so grateful that I did! I’m British and am married to an Irishman. I worked as a corporate lawyer before I left London to move to China in 2007 and decided I didn’t want to sell my soul anymore so I got a cookery qualification.

I worked as a corporate lawyer before I left London to move to China in 2007 and decided I didn’t want to sell my soul anymore so I got a cookery qualification at the Ballymaloe Cookery school in Ireland and have been teaching cookery to kids and adults in Shanghai since then. I adore cooking and eating (too much sometimes!) and I love the challenges and inspirations that China gives us in the kitchen.
BLOG DESCRIPTION
My blog is going to be about cooking and cooking in China. It’s amazing how much the availability of things has improved just over the time I’ve lived here but it can still be a challenge to find some things and, like all ShanghaiMamas, I’ve learnt where I can improvise, compromise, and strategize to make my recipes taste like they should. I’m really looking forward to seeing other Mamas’ comments on how they make things taste like home!
It’s a great introduction piece. I hope you enjoy what you are doing. Also, I am wondering if anyone here ever heard that people here are ordering food ingredients as a group for better prices and more varieties. If there is such a group, please let me know. I would like to join in too. Although I don’t know much about cooking, but I would love to try. Thanks.

Hi Rhian,
I am only here for 5 weeks so far and didn’t have to cook yet. Soon I will have to face the challenge and a challenge it seems like by looking at he meats in the stores. Above it all I love vegetarian food, but my husband and daughter are definitely meat eaters. I am looking forward to your blog. Please tell me all your secrets!!!
Hi Rhian, I’d love to meet up with you! Like you I used to work in the corporate world but started studying Nutritional Therapy in 2006 in an effort to find more fulfillment in what I do.. Now I’m nearly done I want to learn more about the cooking classes you’re giving and how it is working out for you! Amazing too that you studied cooking in Ireland – that’s where I’ve been living these past 3 1/2 years and where my son Leo was born in June 🙂 Let me know if perhaps we could meet up for coffee or something some time soon? Ellen
Hi Rhian, on my recent trip to Scotland I really got into cooking! Me of all people, but it was very relaxing and a fun way to spend the time when it’s constantly raining outside. 🙂 I’m looking forward to your blog. Thanks.
