Interested to learn and share about breastfeeding in a supportive community? Join the Liquid Gold two-day Breastfeeding Gathering this weekend in-person (Motherground Westbund Xuhui District, 2937 Longteng Avenue, Unit 1-3) or online.

Occasionally Shanghai Mamas loves to highlight some of the incredible community-building work that our members are doing. Longtime Shanghai Mamas, Mandy Cai and Charlene Ruan are organizing a two-day breastfeeding gathering this weekend, January 15th and 16th to connect mothers interested in sharing about breastfeeding. Included in the lineup of speakers are many Shanghai Mamas supporters including former Executive committee member, Louise Roy, and Shanghai Mamas co-founder, Melanie Ham.

Liquid Gold is going to be more than just PowerPoint presentations and droning speakers. The aim is to connect the speakers to the participants by storytelling while sharing empowering and encouraging info to build a mother’s confidence in her body and baby.

According to organizer, Mandy Cai,

“Liquid Gold was born out of the desire to have deeper conversations about what we personally experienced as breastfeeding mothers. We are often told that ‘breast is best’ and the benefits of breastfeeding are indisputable, but what is often missing from popular literature and education is how to have a rewarding journey. The guests that are speaking have a wide array of different experiences, and through a storytelling format, we hope to shine light on the emotional and nuanced human complexities that come along with the pursuit of breastfeeding beyond physiological technicalities.”

THE LINEUP

Saturday 15th Jan

Session #1 – 10am-11:30am

Toddlerhood: the evolution of a breastfeeding journey with Amy & Cibele

For new mothers, making it to the 6-month milestone often comes with overcoming many challenges. By the time the breastfeeding journey reaches toddlerhood, that relationship often transforms into a beautiful bond resulting in amusing interactions and bittersweet endings.

Session #2 – 1pm-2:30pm

Demystifying and decoding lactation science with Dr Leila Sabet

Most of us know some of the benefits of breastfeeding, however, few of us have had a glimpse of what the research is saying. Through this talk, we will gain an understanding of the latest in lactation science as well as why there is a gap between research and clinical practice.

Session #3 – 3:30pm-5pm

From the fathers: exploring their role and perspective with Carel & BC

The success of breastfeeding is contingent on the support of our partners, but rarely do we dive in to understand what the experience is like for them. Three fathers will share their stories about embarking on this journey with their growing families.

Sunday 16th Jan

Session #4 – 10am-11:30am

Breastfeeding through unexpected challenges with Caroline & Camille

When unexpected challenges arise, the nutritional and emotional benefits of breastfeeding can offer relief for families. Two mothers who experienced unexpected medical challenges share their insights on the difference breastfeeding made for them.

Session #5 – 1pm-2:30pm

Emotional TLC: supporting the often neglected side of breastfeeding with Louise Roy

Breastfeeding is one of the most physically and emotionally demanding jobs of a lifetime. With much of our focus on the physiology of nursing and needs of our babies, we often neglect to prepare for the emotional aspects of this new role. Through this talk, we will talk about how to build a support system for emotional health.

Session #6 – 3:30pm-5pm

The great confusion: perceptions of milk supply with Melanie Ham

Insufficient milk supply is cited as the most common reason for supplementation and the end of breastfeeding journeys. This talk aims to serve as a comprehensive look into common misconceptions and encourages trust in the intelligence of our bodies.
