The thing that makes living in Shanghai possible… for me…
October 26, 2016 at 6:58 PMSo, this is the 10-year Anniversary of ShanghaiMamas, and in my 6 years here, I have been FAR more involved in ShanghaiMamas than I could ever have known. For me six years ago, almost the only way to connect with other parents was exclusively online through ShanghaiMamas and at their coffee mornings and other events. There were the Embassy and Consulate groups, although in general they didn’t cater so well to the young parent crowd, and those with school aged kids could get involved with the school groups.
Rhian and Kerry were the first ones to bring ShanghaiMamas coffee mornings to Hongqiao, and I was one of their early attendees, and as their children grew up and they moved on I filled their shoes. I met many Hongqiao Mamas through the coffee mornings. Then when my kids grew up and went to school I shifted ‘Shanghai Mama’ gears.
For parents arriving in the last 2 years or so, it may be difficult to understand how crucial ShanghaiMamas was to myself and other expats who were here before the days of WeChat. Also, when getting onto FB was WAY harder than it is now, ShanghaiMamas was a lifeline to staying alive.
For me ShanghaiMamas has provided me with strong and lasting friendships, even though some of those friends may no longer be in Shanghai. It has enabled and lead to connections that otherwise may never have happened. Also it was because of the ShanghaiMama connections that many wechat groups were able to begin, grow, duplicate and evolve.
For me, ShanghaiMamas is THE thing which has underscored all other aspects which have helped me to survive, and thrive, in Shanghai.
It is for this reason firstly that I am running the Sunset Sunday Celebration. To really and truly celebrate what these crazy mamas started, and what having ShanghaiMamas has meant to me and all my friends. None of which would have happened without ShanghaiMamas. Secondly because I am a TaiTai, we DO NOT celebrate something as awesome as this milestone without bubbles!!! It just has to be done! It is for these two reasons that Sunset Sunday is happening. The is an exclusive, limited seating ShanghaiMama event which is not to be missed! and certainly will not be repeated.
If ShanghaiMamas has meant something to you, I encourage you to book the babysitter, grab your husband, grab a friend and book a ticket or a table. There are tables of 6, 8 and 10, come and celebrate this milestone and enjoy the freeflow!
I hope to see you there!
