Lantern Festival Traditions

Chinese New Year officially ends with the Lantern Festival.  For the past 2 years our family has been going to the Jing’an Community Lantern Festival, thanks to one of the Shanghai Mamas who sends out an invitation to let us know when and where.  The residents in the community put on a show with traditional dancing, cross-talk, and some modern stuff too.  We have seen traditional crafts (like blown sugar and paper cutting) and play games – it’s something we look forward to every year.    – Contributed by Jenny Whitaker

Welcome to the Shanghai My Eye! photoblog project. Each entry features one photo taken somewhere around town that speaks in some way to the experience of living in this mad and marvelous metropolis. The goal is to build up a collection of images of Shanghai as seen through the eye of the community – beautiful, strange, surprising, alarming, amazing. So please, send me your photos, along with a short paragraph about what the image means to you.

Email contributions to: You are welcome to submit as many photos as you like, but separately please – only one photo and description per email.

  1. This was taken 2 years ago, but we went to the Jing’an Lantern Festival last year – IF it is happening again this year it will be held this weekend. I’m trying to find out some info and will post anything I find on the main board.

  2. Well, I found out that due to the fire in late 2010 in Jing’an District they are not holding the Lantern Festival this year. :o(
