Solo-parenting for the weekend, while the husband was away for work, I was looking to do something fun before the start of a long summer in Shanghai. I decided to take them to the Portman Ritz-Carlton ‘Kids Night Safari Adventure Getaway’. We’d never done a staycation before, so I wasn’t sure if it would actually ‘feel’ like a holiday. Upon entering the room, and finding all the personal touches and ‘safari themed’ kid’s activities, I was immediately won over. The boys couldn’t get into the tent fast enough, and it took some expert level distraction for me to manage a few ‘before pictures’ of the room before letting them loose. The camping tent, complete with flashlights, robes and slippers was the highlight and once the kids climbed inside it was virtually impossible to get them out.

It didn’t take long for the kids to notice two twin Ritz-Carlton chocolate candy Lions, which they affectionately named “Tigey” (yes, I know it’s a lion…), and accompanying mallet for them to smash and discover the surprises inside!

Before the smashing!

We stayed in the Club Premier Suite, which had a huge bed and separate living area perfect for the kids to run around in. I loved the thought and detail that went into providing the amenities specifically for children.

Good to Know

Club Lounge Access – If you book a Club Level room, you get access to the 43rd floor Club Lounge. There are 5 different culinary experiences throughout the day, and complimentary cocktails, chocolate and cordials.

Activities

The Ritz Kids package includes a variety of activities for children, with varied activities from week to week. We happened to stay the weekend before Dragonboat Festival, so the Ritz Chefs along with some very patient staff helped us to fill and wrap traditional Zongzi (sticky rice dumplings). Other activities offered are cake decorating, Chinese fan making, mocktail making with the resident bartender (this could come in handy down the line 😊), and hotel scavenger hunts.

We spent the afternoon having a beautiful afternoon tea at Terrace 8, which I may have devoured all to myself, and the kids were treated to a second activity of making their own decorative mini garden.

If you want to explore more of the surrounding area, the Portman Ritz-Carlton have created a beautiful curated collection of walking maps for you and the family to discover hidden gems in the neighborhood. There are 4 different maps to choose from: Foodie Trail, Heritage Trail, Art Trail, and Best of the Neighborhood Trail.

Good to Know

  • Terrace 8 not only has beautiful sweeping views of downtown area, but you can chill-out with a glass of Moët & Chandon champagne, wine selections and free-flow beverages. Terrace 8 serves up a spread of Spanish, Asian and Middle-Eastern tapas.
  • The terrace also gives you access to one of the best playgrounds in the city! We spent a couple hours playing before heading back up to the room.

Food Options

We opted for the quieter Club Lounge for breakfast, but for dinner we checked out The Portman Restaurant for the sprawling crawfish dinner buffet (available on weekends). If you or the kids aren’t such big fans of seafood or have allergies, you can also order off the main menu, which has several different Western options as well. Don’t forget the dessert buffet! AND there’s a chocolate fountain!! Need I say more??
