Swimming pools are always the best idea to spend time with your kids, especially during the hot Shanghainese summer. Shanghai offers many pools, but not all are really kids friendly. If you wonder which pool to take your kids this summer, this is a list of selected child friendly pools:

Compound & Villa Pools

Ambassy Club (Xuhui)

You can find Ambassy Club in all the rankings of the swimming pools in Shanghai. It is popular among families, and it offers two pools.

The outdoor pool is nice, and there is a small indoor pool for the babies, which might be good during the hot days to avoid sunburn. Though it is not that cozy. You will not find lounges and chill-out music in there. However, it might be convenient for the swimming classes. The main pool is 1,2m deep.

You can buy a club membership: 1 adult and 1 child is an 8800 RMB annual fee; 2 adults and 1 child is a 12800 RMB annual fee; three months is 4600 RMB and 5500 RMB. The price is for children under 13 years old. Their membership gives you access to the gym and spa.

If you do not want a membership, you can get a day pass as a trial period. The price is 300 RMB for adults and 160 RMB for kids. They will charge the entrance fee, even for a baby. Keep the receipts because if you want to join the club after, they will return your money for these day passes.

Swimland offers swimming courses there. You can get a class for beginners for 225 RMB with a Chinese-speaking coach or 245 RMB with an English-speaking coach. The class duration is 30 minutes. Currently, they do not have classes for babies, and their Starfish class is for 3+ kids.

When you are heading there, do not forget to bring your towel!

Grand Plaza Club House (Jingan)

Price: 150 RMB on weekdays, 200 RMB on weekends, and 80 RMB for kids.

Grand Plaza’s outdoor pool is shallow, and it is more about chill-out next to the water than swimming. However, the kids might enjoy it. There is also a small pool for the small kids.

It is a popular spot on weekends. So it might be hard to get a table under the umbrella. You can try to be an early bird.

The entrance fee is 150 RMB during the weekdays, and 200 RMB the weekends. This includes a towel. The kids can enter for 80 RMB if they are below 1.2m.

Shimao Riviera Garden Pool (Pudong)

Shimao Riviera compound on another side of the river has both outdoor and indoor pools. The outdoor pool is large and nice, with a sandy beach and paddling pool for the small kids. You can spend all day there. It is going to be open in June.

They charge a 200 RMB entry fee for adults and 100 RMB for kids.

Vizcaya club (Pudong)

Vizcaya Club in a Pudong area is a must-visit for families with kids. It is a beautiful Spanish Style Villa with a nicely heated indoor pool and impressive outdoor pools for adults and kids. Mommies with babies or with older kids will enjoy getting Vitamin D in there.

The entry fee of 198 RMB is the same for adults and kids. They are usually open from 10 AM until 7 PM. The outdoor pool will be open at the end of May.

They also offer swimming classes for adults and kids. They will charge you 380 RMB per hour, which includes the entry fee. If you buy 10-20 lessons, you will get a discount.

Hotel & Resort Pools

Hotel Nikko (Changning)

Hotel Nikko has a small and cozy pool. It is perfect for babies, as the water is quite warm. Older kids might get bored in there. The daily pass is a pricey, 400 RMB, but they do not charge for babies under four months old. You can get an annual membership card for 14800 RMB per year, which includes a gym and swimming pool.

Purple Mountain ( Pudong)

For those who live near Lujiazui, it might be a great option. They have a large round rooftop outdoor pool and a small pool for the kids. It might be a great option during hot summer days. Take your swimming cap with you, and they will provide you with a towel.

The adults will pay 200 RMB for the entry fee, and for the kids is half price. They also offer swimming classes, 380 RMB per hour, which includes the entry fee.

The outdoor pool is not open yet. The day is TBC.

JW Marriott Tomorrow Square (Huangpu)

It is a pricey option, but you are paying for the view of People’s Square Park and Marriot itself.

They have an indoor and outdoor rooftop pool. The outdoor pool is shallow, which is convenient for the kids. It is open daily from 8.30 am to 9.30 pm. The fee is 388 RMB for adults or 228 RMB for kids.

Oriental Spring (Minhang)

Oriental Springs is perfect for the whole family and is just half an hour from downtown. It has 20 indoor and outdoor pools. They offer water toys and as well paddling pool. Everyone will be busy there. While the dad can watch the kids, the mom can get a good massage or enjoy a good sauna.

The entry fee is around 108 RMB, but you can get the tickets via Dianping, which is usually a great deal (around 90 RMB for adults and 50 RMB for kids.) You do not need to buy a ticket for the kids below 1.2 meters.

Both indoor and outdoor are already open.

Sofitel Shanghai Sheshan Oriental (Songjiang)

If you do not mind driving about an hour from the city center, you can have a mini trip and enjoy a day in this beautiful resort. The outdoor pool is huge, over 4400 sqm, and it has a beach with real sand. There is also an indoor heated pool.

They charge 300 RMB for adults and 150 RMB for kids below 1.2 meters.

Amara Hotel Pool (Putuo)

Amara Hotel’s pool is quite popular among families. They have a nice outdoor pool with all the facilities nearby. They offer day passes, and children can enter for half the ticket price.

More Affordable Options

City Hotel (Huangpu)

This four-star hotel has a small pool on the 6th floor, where you can bring your kids. It is a convenient option for two reasons: a great location (just next to Julu Lu) and a reasonable price.

The daily pass during the working days is 68 RMB and during the weekends 88 RMB for adults and kids. They recommend bringing the kids from 3 years old. Swimming lessons are also available, although with a Chinese-speaking coach. They will charge you 300 RMB for about an hour of the lesson.

New Star (Minhang and Pudong)

It is a Korean-style bathhouse with a large spa and currently has two locations, Pudong and Minhang. You might think: what am I going to do with the kids in the bathhouse? Well, it has various pools and a kids’ area, which is the perfect option for the whole family. Minhang has a great outdoor pool with a small section for kids. The advantage of this place is that it is rarely overcrowded. The Pudong bathhouse has quite a big pool as well.
