Shanghai Charitable Organizations Round Up

Did you know that March 5th is officially known as “Learn from Lei Feng Day” (Chinese: 学雷锋日; pinyin: Xué Léi Fēng Rì)? Chinese leaders have praised Lei Feng as the personification of altruism, selflessness, and moral character for his revolutionary sacrifices… so in the spirit of Lei Feng, we have compiled a list of organizations that are doing charitable work to help others in the community. We’ve recently reached out to all of them to ask what kind of help and support they need and they have answered the call with ways you can help. We know there is a deep well of untapped talent in the international community so please reach out directly to these organizations to offer your time and talents.

Shanghai Young Bakers (SYB) is a charity program providing free training in French bakery to marginalised Chinese youth aged 17 to 23, enabling them to find qualified jobs and lead independent lives after graduation.

SYB empowers disadvantaged young adults who had to drop out of school because of their family situation (parents’ death, sickness, disability or imprisonment) and are excluded from stable employment.

How Can You Help

Graduation Ceremony is the largest event that SYB organizes every year. It is the time for us to celebrate the graduates’ completion of their program through hard work and their success in landing job offers in the industry. We also thank the teachers, staff members, supporters, sponsors and everyone else who have supported our program and students along the way.

In the evening of the event, we invite our family, friends and community members as well as our sponsors and partners to attend the ceremony. Students will receive their diploma one by one, perform on stage and there will be speakers from the relevant charity foundations and the French consulate. Students will have prepared a grand feast for guests to enjoy.

Volunteers can help us with a range of activites at the graduation ceremony, including registering guests, arranging the set-up of the room, helping with serving food and drinks and other ad-hoc tasks.

SYB is always on the lookout for volunteers to help manage its market booth on weekends to promote the organisation and its programme. Paw Pals Animal Rescue (PPAR) is a non-profit animal rescue group founded by rescuers and volunteers. It was established in 2007 in the city of Shanghai. Our mission is to provide assistance, shelter, care, rehabilitation and forever loving homes to rescued pets, promoting education and understanding of animal welfare among the public.

How Can You Help

Rescue cats are often fearful, shy, and nervous around humans, but they can warm up quickly when they have a chance to be around kind and gentle people. Spending time helping to socialize cats is a great way to help the pet have a smooth transition from the PPAR shelter to their forever loving home, and is a key aspect of making an adoption successful.

If you would like to help socialize future pets, please let PPAR know when you are available for a shelter tour, an introduction for the volunteer role and a chance to meet some of the adorable furry residents. Socialization volunteers are welcome daily on weekdays and weekends and hours are from 9am-3pm (please arrive the latest by 1pm). The shelter location is in the Minhang District.

In addition to pet socialization volunteers, PPAR also needs other volunteers with other skills:

  • Photographerts who can take high quality, colorful, and fun images of rescue cats living in the PPAR shelter
  • Volunteers who can represent PPAR at seasonal markets and events. This involves sitting at a table and talking with those in the community about rescue animal adoption and shelter support.
  • Advocating for ethical animal treatment and sharing information about PPAR rescue cats available for adoption on social media

We’re also open for creative ideas about how to help rescued cats. If you wish to get in touch please reach out via ppar_sh@163.com.
